I'm pretty late to the clarinet (I play various other instruments), and I've only studied with my teacher nine or so of the Rose Etudes so far, but the ones I've studied have advanced my technique surprisingly fast and I've found them very musical and pleasing pieces. David Hite has edited these in careful detail such that I never have to wonder when to take a breath or how to interpret a phrase.EDIT: One year later I've studied all but a few of the Rose Etudes, and what I said above still applies.
Love this book so much, just gave it a read through and I'm loving a lot of what I'm seeing. I like a lot of Hite's added expressive notation, and most of it is exactly the same as what I've handwritten in my copies of these etudes. I also enjoyed the short history lesson at the beginning, as well as the footnotes. Also, I am so thankful for the tempo markings and extra detail that you just don't get elsewhere.My only complaint that I have is that I wish the paper that it was printed on was white and not that kind of antique-ish paper. It's still great, and I like it because it handles pencil and erasing a lot better than the white paper that Carl Fischer uses.
I love playing the clarinet and I have region band auditions in high school and a lot of the studies are in the book so it’s great to get a head start on them.
Purchased this to keep in my studio for students, as a replacement to my 20-year-old well-worn copy with pencil markings. For some reason the publisher is printing the music on yellow-tinged paper, not the usual bright white. Sorry, but it's very annoying to look at. Whose bright idea of changing the paper color, was that?
I'm a music major at Western Carolina University and I use this book every day. Also a large portion of all county and all district solos come from this book (at least in north carolina they do). Plus this book its just good for a short audition piece if your looking for an étude. If you are a clarinet player and you want to be serious just save yourself the time and buy this now.
I got this for allstate so I don't have to wait for new copies from my band director each year. Great purchase, there's a s***load of stuff in this book.
